Malaysia Vasudevan Vinyl Records

Malaysia Vasudevan (1944–2011) was born in Kuala Selangor, Malaysia, and came to Madras with a Tamil drama troupe whose play was being filmed. His breakthrough was Ilaiyaraaja's 16 Vayathinile (1977), in which "Aattukutti Muttai Ittu", a duet with S. Janaki, made his name. He went on to sing for M.S. Viswanathan, Shankar-Ganesh and many other composers, acted in Tamil films too, and was equally at home in comedy songs, devotional numbers and emotional scenes.

The records in this collection

Our Malaysia Vasudevan vinyl records are almost entirely Tamil: original film soundtrack LPs from the 1980s and early 1990s on which he is credited as a playback singer, not solo albums. 41 records carry his credit, shared most often with S.P. Balasubrahmanyam, S. Janaki, K.S. Chitra, K.J. Yesudas and Mano. Chandrabose is the composer you will meet most, alongside Ilaiyaraaja and Shankar-Ganesh, with lyrics largely by Vaali, Vairamuthu and Pulamaipithan. Labels include Echo, Soundtronics, Sangeetha, AVM Audio, EMI and T-Series. Look for Namma Ooru Nalla Ooru (1986), Annakili Sonnakathai (1989), Periya Idathu Pillai (1990) and Aatha Un Koyilile (1991), plus the odd Kannada or Malayalam title.

Buying Malaysia Vasudevan vinyl from us

Many Tamil LPs of this period have lived through years of South Indian humidity, so sleeves often show ring wear, foxing or split seams even when the vinyl plays well. We grade record and sleeve separately, describe faults plainly and photograph the actual copy you will receive. Everything ships from Bengaluru in rigid packaging, across India and overseas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these Malaysia Vasudevan solo albums?

No. Each is the original soundtrack of a film, and his songs share the record with those of the film's other singers.

Why do some records name two films?

A few LPs here carry songs from two Tamil films on one disc, such as Vacha Kuri Thappathu with Poovizhi Raja, and Kaliyugam with Kalicharan. The listing names both films; ask us if you need the full track list.
