A first pressing is the record as it was first heard: cut from the earliest stampers, in the original sleeve, before any repress or reissue. This small, hand-picked collection gathers the LPs in our store that we are confident are first presses — and because they are verified copy by copy, it will always be a short shelf rather than a long one.

The selection cuts across everything we love about Indian vinyl. There are devotional landmarks like Lata Recites Bhagwad Geeta and Dnyaneshwari and Sant Vani, a collection of songs from India's saint poets. There are compilations honouring the earliest giants of Indian recorded music — Pankaj Mullick and Juthika Roy, voices from the very foundation of Indian playback and bhajan singing — alongside Vijay Raghav Rao's Rainbow. Why first pressings matter

Collectors chase first presses for two reasons. The first is sound: early stampers, cut closest to the master tape, often deliver a livelier, more detailed pressing than later runs made from worn or recut parts. The second is history — original label typography, first-state sleeve art and inserts that later editions quietly changed or dropped. On Indian releases from HMV and EMI India, those first-run details are exactly what distinguish an original from the many represses that followed popular titles.

Condition still rules, however — a clean later press will always beat a worn first press for listening. For collecting, originality is the point; for playback, grade matters most. **Are Indian first pressings harder to find than Western ones?** For popular titles, yes. Hit Indian LPs were repressed many times over the years, and first-run copies were played hard in their day, so surviving originals in good condition are scarce.
