Devotional music was one of the biggest sellers of the Indian vinyl era, and this is one of the deepest shelves in our store. From the 1960s through the 80s, labels recorded bhajans, temple songs, scripture recitations and festival music in every major Indian language, pressed for households that played them daily at the family shrine. This collection spans that whole world — Hindu devotional in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi and Sanskrit, alongside Sikh, Islamic and Christian religious records as they come into stock.

Artists and traditions in this collection

The Tamil devotional shelf is especially strong. K. Veeramani's Ayyappan songs — including his much-loved 1976 LP — anchor a run of records tied to the Sabarimala pilgrimage season, joined by L.R. Eswari's Ayyappan album and Amman records from two great playback voices, P. Susheela and Vani Jairam. Sanskrit recitation is represented by a remarkable multi-part Bhagavad Gita series pressed chapter by chapter, and by several pressings of the classic Bhaja Govindam and Vishnu Sahasranamam coupling. Hindi bhajan records include Anup Jalota's devotional albums and Manhar's Bezubaan, while Telugu listeners will find the Balaji Pancharatna Mala LPs and Kannada devotees the Siddhalingeswara Swamy record.

Why devotional records matter on vinyl

These were working records — HMV and EMI India pressed them in vast numbers because families actually wore them out, and later titles appeared on Polydor and Music India as the 80s bhajan wave crested. The result is a paradox collectors know well: common titles are easy to find but hard to find clean, while regional-language devotionals and scripture sets can be genuinely rare. Very little of this catalogue made it to streaming with its original sound intact, and sleeve art — deity portraits, temple photography — is a devotional art form of its own.

Why do Ayyappan and Amman records appear in so many copies?

Seasonal devotion drove huge sales — Ayyappan LPs were bought fresh each pilgrimage season, and Amman songs played through temple festivals — so labels repressed them year after year. Multiple copies mean you can choose your condition: some were played once a year and survive beautifully, others ran daily for a decade. Our individual grading tells you which you are getting.

Are the Bhagavad Gita recitation LPs complete sets?

They were issued as multi-volume series, one or two chapters per disc, and complete sets rarely survive together. We list the individual volumes we hold, clearly numbered, so you can build a set over time. Collectors of Sanskrit recitation often value clean single volumes over battered complete runs — condition is everything with spoken-word pressings.
