Marathi Vinyl Records

Original Marathi vinyl — and a shelf with a different character to our other regional collections. Where the Tamil and Kannada sections are built on film soundtracks, Maharashtra's recorded tradition reaches wider: Natya Sangeet from the musical stage, devotional abhang and bhajan, folk and children's songs, alongside the film LPs.

What is on this shelf

The centrepiece is Geet Ramayan, the song cycle written by G.D. Madgulkar and composed and sung by Sudhir Phadke, first broadcast on All India Radio in the mid-1950s and still the most beloved Marathi recording ever made — we hold several copies. Beyond it: Marathi Stage Songs and Sangeet Manapman from the Natya Sangeet tradition that predates Indian film music altogether, devotional records including Shri Sai Darbar, film LPs such as Swayamvar, Paij, Darodekhor and Kashasathi Premasathi, and a couple of Marathi children's song records that almost never surface. Most are EMI and HMV pressings.

A small and growing shelf

Marathi records were pressed for a regional audience in modest numbers, and far fewer have survived in playable condition than the Hindi equivalents of the same years. This collection is compact by necessity and grows as we find clean copies. If you collect Marathi vinyl it is worth checking back, or writing to us about titles you are hunting.

Every record is graded honestly, sleeve and vinyl separately, with photographs of the actual copy. We ship worldwide from Bengaluru in rigid mailers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Marathi vinyl records rare?

Comparatively, yes. Pressing runs were small, distribution was regional, and decades of humid storage thinned the survivors. Common Hindi film LPs of the same period turn up regularly; Marathi titles in clean condition with intact sleeves do not.

Do you have Geet Ramayan on vinyl?

Usually yes — it is the one Marathi record that comes to us with any regularity, and we normally hold more than one copy. Condition varies, so check the individual listing; each is photographed as the actual copy you will receive.

What is Natya Sangeet?

The song tradition of Marathi musical theatre, which flourished from the late nineteenth century and shaped much of what came after it in Indian film music. Records of stage songs are a distinct collecting area from film soundtracks, and a good deal harder to find on vinyl.

Can you source a specific Marathi LP for me?

We are always buying. Write to us with the film, play or artist you are after and we will keep an eye out as new collections come in — and we will tell you honestly if it is something we are unlikely to see.
