This is our vintage shelf — original gramophone records and vinyl LPs pressed between the 1940s and the 1970s, from golden-age Hindi film soundtracks to classical recitals, ghazals and early regional cinema. Every record here is an original pressing from the era, not a modern reissue.

What counts as an old record?

We shelve records here by pressing decade: everything from the shellac-to-vinyl transition years through the late 1970s. That spans Naushad and C. Ramchandra's golden-age scores, the Shankar-Jaikishan and O.P. Nayyar era, early stereo experiments, and the first pressings that HMV, Odeon and Columbia India put out when film music first came home.

Old, vintage or antique?

Collectors use the words loosely and it is worth being plain about them. Old vinyl records and old LP records usually mean anything from the microgroove era — the 33⅓ rpm LPs and 45 rpm EPs that make up most of this shelf. Vintage vinyl records tends to mean the same thing with a nod to desirability. Antique records properly belongs to the 78 rpm shellac discs that predate vinyl altogether, and those are a different collecting world with different equipment; our gramophone records guide explains where the line falls. What you will find here is genuine period vinyl, dated by pressing rather than by adjective.

Condition, honestly told

Old records vary enormously in condition, and the difference matters. Every listing is graded honestly with photographs of the actual copy — sleeve and disc — and records without original sleeves are clearly marked. Age-related surface noise is part of the character of these pressings; anything beyond that, we tell you before you buy.

Are old Indian vinyl records valuable?

Some are. Value depends on the pressing, the film or artist, and above all condition. First pressings of landmark soundtracks and clean copies with original sleeves command the most; common titles in played condition remain very affordable ways to start collecting.

Will these old records play on a modern turntable?

The LPs and EPs here are standard 33⅓ and 45 rpm microgroove records — they play on any modern turntable. Only true 78 rpm shellac discs need special equipment, and we mark those clearly in the listing.

Do you sell antique 78 rpm records?

Rarely. Our stock is overwhelmingly microgroove vinyl — LPs and EPs from the 1940s onward. Shellac 78s survive in far smaller numbers and we list them only when a genuinely playable copy comes in, so if that is specifically what you are after it is worth writing to us rather than waiting for one to appear.

How old are the oldest records you stock?

The earliest shelf here is the 1940s, and those are the scarcest. The 1960s and 1970s pressings are the deepest part of the collection, simply because more of them were made and more survived. If you are after a particular decade, the 1960s and 1970s shelves break it down further.
