S. Janaki Vinyl Records

S. Janaki was born in 1938 in what is now Andhra Pradesh and made her film debut in 1957 with the Tamil film Vidhiyin Vilayattu. Over a career of some six decades she sang in many languages, above all Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam, as well as Hindi. She is closely associated with Ilaiyaraaja, and in Kannada with Rajan-Nagendra and Hamsalekha, and her duets with S.P. Balasubrahmanyam remain widely loved.

The records in this collection

81 records carry an S. Janaki credit. Hindi and Tamil soundtracks make up most of the shelf in almost equal measure, with some Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam titles too, and most date from the 1980s. They are film soundtracks, plus a few devotional and classical compilations, on which she sings one or more songs, not solo albums. Her partners range from S.P. Balasubrahmanyam, Malaysia Vasudevan and P. Susheela to Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle, and the composers from Laxmikant-Pyarelal and Bappi Lahiri to Chandrabose, Ilaiyaraaja and Hamsalekha.

Look for the Hindi Mard (1985) and Aakhree Raasta (1986), the Tamil Periya Idathu Pillai (1990) and Aatha Un Koyilile (1991), and Chiranjeevi's Telugu Manchi Donga. EMI, T-Series and Music India sit alongside South Indian labels such as Sangeetha, Echo and Lahari.
