1980's Indian Music Vinyl Records

The 1980s were the last full decade of the Indian LP — the years when the disco beat arrived in Bombay, Amitabh Bachchan ruled the marquee, and soundtrack records shared shop counters with the cassettes that would soon replace them. This is our deepest decade collection, covering the big action soundtracks, family dramas, mythologicals and everything between.

Composers and films in this collection

Laxmikant–Pyarelal were the decade's workhorses, and their scores are everywhere here — the Amitabh Bachchan blockbuster Desh Premee (1982), the angry-young-man vehicle Inquilaab (1984) and the family favourite Swarag Se Sunder (1986) among them. Kalyanji–Anandji's Vidhaata (1982) represents the other great duo of the era. You will also find their seventies carryovers still in print, like the Rajesh Khanna classic Haathi Mere Saathi, alongside the decade's own crop — Jaisi Karni Waisi Bharni, Dosti Dushmani, Chameli Ki Shaadi, Naseeb Apna Apna and the dance drama Payal Ki Jhankaar. Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle still led the playback ranks, with the synthesised, disco-inflected sound of the period — Bappi Lahiri's great contribution to the decade — colouring many of these grooves.

Why 1980s pressings matter to collectors

Eighties Hindi film LPs came mainly from The Gramophone Company of India (HMV) and from Music India (the Polydor lineage), with newer labels such as T-Series joining late in the decade. Because cassettes were overtaking vinyl, many later-eighties LPs had smaller pressing runs than their seventies counterparts — some titles that sold lakhs of tapes exist on vinyl in surprisingly modest numbers. That inversion makes the decade fertile ground: overlooked soundtracks, bold synth arrangements and sleeve art in full masala colour, often at prices friendlier than sixties rarities.
