Ilaiyaraaja Vinyl Records

Original Ilaiyaraaja vinyl — 22 records credited to him as music director, almost all Tamil film LPs from the decade when he was scoring several films at once. Original Indian pressings, honestly graded and photographed as the copy you receive, shipped worldwide from Bengaluru.

Why these records matter

Ilaiyaraaja arrived with Annakili in 1976 and changed what Tamil film music sounded like. He took the folk melodies of the Tamil countryside and scored them for full orchestra, wrote counterpoint into songs that had never carried it, and did it at a pace that has few parallels anywhere in film music — well over a thousand films across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam cinema. The records on this shelf come mostly from the 1980s, the years when an Ilaiyaraaja soundtrack was the reason a great many of these LPs were pressed at all.

What is on this shelf

Tamil soundtracks dominate — Thani Kattu Raja, Vetrikarangal, Nandini, Naane Raja Naane Manthiri, Pasi, Vaazhga Valarga and others from across the eighties. A few records reach outside Tamil: a Kannada EP, and Manaivi Ready in both its Tamil and Malayalam pressings, a reminder that he worked across all four southern industries at once.

Condition runs the full range and the listing says which. Several copies are offered without sleeves at a lower price — worth knowing if you are buying to play rather than to shelve. Prices here run from about ₹500 for a played copy without its sleeve to ₹3,600 for the scarcer titles in strong condition.

A note on scarcity

Tamil film LPs from the 1980s were pressed in modest numbers and played hard, and Ilaiyaraaja titles were played hardest of all. Clean copies with intact sleeves are genuinely difficult to find, which is why this shelf stays small and changes often. If you are looking for a specific soundtrack that is not listed, write to us — these come through in collections regularly.
