Shankar-Ganesh Vinyl Records

Shankar-Ganesh are a film composer duo who started in 1964 as assistants to M.S. Viswanathan and T.K. Ramamoorthy. When a film the lyricist Kannadasan planned to launch them with was stopped, he took them to the producer Chinnappa Devar, and Magaraasi (1967) became their first release. They went on to score Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam and Telugu films; Shankar died prematurely, and Ganesh carried on under the joint name.

17 records carry a Shankar-Ganesh credit: soundtracks of films the duo scored, nearly all Tamil and from the late 1980s. The headline record is Samsaram Athu Minsaram (1986), Visu’s AVM family drama with lyrics by Vairamuthu. Beside it sit Visu’s Thirumathi Oru Vegumathi (1987) and Manivannan’s Sandhana Kaatru (1990). S.P. Balasubrahmanyam is heard most, with Vani Jairam, Malaysia Vasudevan, S. Janaki and K.S. Chitra, on AVM Audio, Soundtronics, Sangeetha and Lahari pressings.
