Why powered speakers suit a record shop

A turntable puts out a very low-level signal that needs RIAA equalisation and gain before an amplifier can use it. Traditionally that means a phono stage, an amplifier and a pair of passive speakers: three purchases and a lot of cabling. Powered monitors with a phono input collapse that into one. Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an amplifier with these speakers?

No. These are powered, or active, speakers: the amplification is inside the cabinet. You connect a source directly, which for a record player means the phono input.

Can I connect my turntable directly?

Yes, where the model has a phono input with a Phono/Line switch and an earth terminal, which both Klipsch models here do. If your deck already has its own built-in phono stage, switch the input to Line instead.

Which size should I choose?

Smaller cabinets suit a desk or a bookshelf within a couple of metres of you. Larger ones suit a living room, where the extra driver size and power give more headroom and lower bass. Room size matters more than raw wattage.
