Record Player Buying Guide: How to Choose a Turntable in India

This guide is for anyone in India buying a first record player, or reviving an inherited one. It covers how a turntable works, how to set one up without harming your records, what else you need to hear anything at all, and how dust, damp and Indian mains change the answers.

How a record player works

Four things happen in order. The platter turns the disc at a fixed 33 1/3, 45 or 78 rpm. The stylus is shaken by the modulations cut into the groove walls. The cartridge turns that movement into a few thousandths of a volt. A phono stage amplifies it and reverses the equalisation applied at cutting.

The speed is constant in revolutions, not in groove travelled: as the arm swings inwards the groove passes more slowly, from roughly 50 cm per second at the start of a 12-inch LP side to about 20 cm at the innermost grooves. The same music is packed into less vinyl, which is why sibilance and strain show up at the end of a side.

The parts, and what each is for

  • The plinth, feet and platter. A cartridge cannot tell your speakers shaking the table from the groove itself. The plinth should be inert rather than heavy, on compliant feet: isolation comes from mass and springiness working as a pair. Against footfall the support matters more than the deck: use a rigid shelf, never the one carrying your speakers. The platter is a flywheel, smoothing motor speed variations otherwise heard as wow.
  • The tonearm. Rigid, because a cartridge reads the stylus moving relative to its own body, so flex is subtracted from the music; and near-frictionless, though free is not loose, since a worn bearing measures low friction and is worse. Its mass should suit the cartridge's springiness, their shared resonance landing near 8 to 12 Hz. Swinging in an arc, it is tangent to the groove at only two points per side, so alignment is always a compromise.
  • The cartridge and stylus. The only transducer, and arguably the biggest single influence on tone, though setup matters more than which cartridge you start with. Nearly all decks here use moving magnets, whose stylus is a plug-in part you replace yourself; moving coils give more detail but rarely can be re-tipped at home. A worn tip stops matching the groove.

Belt drive or direct drive

A belt filters motor vibration rather than removing it; motor energy also reaches the arm through the plinth, so placement matters as much as drive type. Direct drive puts the platter on the motor spindle, holding speed with a servo that varies torque continuously. Neither wins on principle. Belts are consumables: they stretch and harden over a few years, faster in heat and damp, showing as pitch drift.

How to choose one

Let the factory fit the cartridge

Fitting a cartridge yourself means setting overhang and offset with a protractor, or a jig on arms built to fix the geometry for you, then balancing the arm, setting tracking force and matching anti-skate. A factory-fitted cartridge takes that off your first evening. But ready to play is not nothing to do: you still seat the platter, fit the belt, remove the transit protection and level the deck.

Tracking force and anti-skate

These matter more day to day than fine alignment. Cartridge makers publish a recommended tracking force and a narrow permitted range; use the recommended figure. The usual beginner mistake is setting it too light, assuming less weight means less wear. It is the wrong way round: too light, the stylus cannot hold contact through a loud passage, breaks away and strikes the groove wall again, which does more harm than the missing fraction of a gram. Too heavy adds wear without curing mistracking. Some arms use a numbered counterweight ring, meaningless unless the arm was zero-balanced first; others are set against a gauge. Confirm with a stylus force gauge.

Anti-skate cancels the small inward pull a pivoted arm gets from groove friction. Convention is to set its scale to the tracking force figure, but that is an index rather than a measurement, and many decks have it fixed at the factory. A worn stylus, force set too light, or anti-skate too low all sound the same: a tearing on loud passages, worst near the label.

What else you need

A record player with no speakers in it makes no useful sound alone. Four jobs happen between stylus and ear, gain, equalisation, amplification and speakers, but that need not mean four purchases.

A moving-magnet cartridge puts out a few thousandths of a volt, against the 0.3 to 2 volts a line input expects. Records are also cut to the RIAA curve, bass reduced and treble lifted, because flat bass would make grooves fat and sides short, while the treble lift is pulled back on playback, dragging surface noise down with it. A phono stage supplies the gain and applies the mirror image of that curve. Plug a deck with no phono stage anywhere in the chain into an AUX socket and it sounds far too quiet and tonally wrong, thin at the bottom, hard at the top.

So the question is where the phono stage lives: in the turntable, in your amplifier, or in a box between them. You need one, not two. Look on the back of an amplifier for sockets marked PHONO with a small threaded earth post; if every input reads AUX, LINE, CD or TAPE, there is none inside. Powered speakers do not settle it, since amplification in the cabinet is a different job. Bluetooth transmits outwards to a speaker or headphones rather than receiving from your phone. Treat the deck as roughly half your budget.

Living with a record player in India

Indian mains is 230V at 50Hz, and most 6A wall sockets take a two-pin round Europlug as well as the usual round pins, so anything bought here plugs in as it is. If you are importing, read the marking on the deck or its power supply: many say 100 to 240V, 50/60Hz and need only an adaptor. Otherwise the trap is frequency, not voltage. Where a motor takes its speed from the mains, a deck built for 60Hz runs slow here, by about a sixth, roughly three semitones flat. A transformer changes voltage but not frequency; the fix is the correct pulley.

Damp does its worst to paper rather than vinyl. PVC absorbs almost no water, so humidity does not warp records, but paper drinks it, and above roughly 60% relative humidity mould takes hold on jackets and sleeves and then in the groove, feeding on shed paper fibre and leaving permanent noise. Move records into polyethylene or poly-lined inners, keep any printed original flat inside the jacket, and keep soft PVC sleeves away from vinyl: their plasticisers migrate onto the surface.

Warps come from heat and sustained load, so store records upright and snug, off the floor, and never leave one in a car. Do not assume a warp is somebody's fault: plenty are pressed in, and on records from the 1960s and 70s decades of moulding stress relaxing can raise one unaided.

Dust is the daily enemy in most Indian cities. Brush each side with a carbon-fibre brush, letting it ride on the spinning disc rather than wiping, which pushes grit deeper. Brushing is not cleaning, though: decades of grime need a wet clean, worth assuming on any old pressing. Sleeve the record as soon as the side ends. The dust cover is a trade-off: closed it keeps dust off, but a large thin lid also passes airborne energy from your speakers into the plinth, which is why Pro-Ject advise removing it during play and other makers advise the opposite.

Buying here gets a warranty someone in India can honour and a service route for belts and styli; imports carry customs duty and IGST, with warranty resting on the distributor for the country of sale.

Finally, formats. Every modern deck handles 33 1/3 and 45 rpm, which covers most Indian collections. Shellac 78s need a genuine 78 speed, which many decks do not offer, a much wider stylus, around 2.5 to 3 mil against 0.7 mil for microgroove, and ideally a different playback curve, since 78s pre-date RIAA. Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose a record player if I am a complete beginner?

Start with what you will plug it into: that decides more than the deck does. If you own an amplifier with a phono input and speakers, buy a plain turntable. If you own nothing, you need a phono stage, built in or separate, plus powered speakers.

Do I need speakers with a record player?

Yes, unless the player has speakers built into it. A turntable makes a very small electrical signal and no useful sound of its own. Use passive speakers with an amplifier, or active speakers with amplification inside, but check their inputs: that is not a phono stage.

What is a phono preamp, and do I need one?

A phono stage raises the cartridge's very weak output to line level and reverses the RIAA equalisation applied when the record was cut, where bass is reduced and treble lifted. You need one in the chain, but only one, and it may already be in your amplifier or turntable. Without it, sound is far too quiet and thin.

Belt drive or direct drive, which should I buy?

Neither is better outright. A belt filters motor vibration on its way to the platter. Direct drive couples motor to platter and holds speed with a servo that varies torque continuously, giving instant start-up and the torque DJs need for cueing. For home listening, belt drive is usual.

Can a modern record player play my grandfather's 78 rpm records?

Most cannot, so check the specification. You need a genuine 78 rpm setting, which many decks lack, and a much wider stylus: shellac grooves are far wider, so an LP stylus sits in the bottom of the groove instead of riding its walls.

How long does a turntable needle last?

Manufacturers generally quote 400 to 1,000 hours for a moving-magnet stylus, depending on tip profile, which is one to three years at an hour a day. Replace it sooner if loud passages distort, if sibilance turns harsh, or if the tip looks chipped. Dust shortens stylus life.

How much should I spend on a record player in India?

Spend enough to get past the all-in-one suitcase players, where most regret sits: they pair a ceramic cartridge with a high tracking force and a stylus you cannot replace, so groove wear is faster and there is no upgrade path.
