Suraiya Vinyl Records

Suraiya (1929–2004) was an actress and singer who began as a child artist in the 1930s and was at her peak in the late 1940s and early 1950s. She sang her own songs on screen, notably in Naushad's Anmol Ghadi (1946) and Dillagi (1949) and in Ghulam Mohammed's Mirza Ghalib (1954). She co-starred with Dev Anand in several films and made her last film, Rustam Sohrab, in 1963.

The records in this collection

24 records carry a Suraiya credit, all of them Hindi film songs. Naushad composed the largest share, often to Shakeel Badayuni's lyrics, and the voices beside hers are those of her era: Mohammed Rafi, Shamshad Begum, Noor Jehan and Surendra. Alongside soundtracks such as Anmol Ghadi, Dard, Dillagi and Afsar there are compilations, including an LP titled simply Suraiya and When Melody Was Queen.

Are these original 1940s records?

No. Her best-known films came out when Indian film songs were sold on 78 rpm shellac, years before LPs were pressed in India, so these Suraiya vinyl records are later LP issues and compilations, mostly from the 1960s and 1970s.
