Surendra Vinyl Records

Surendra (1910–1987) was born Surendra Nath Sharma in Batala, Punjab, and was launched as a singer-actor by Mehboob Khan in Deccan Queen (1936). His best-remembered film is Anmol Ghadi (1946), scored by Naushad, where he sang "Awaaz De Kahan Hai" with Noor Jehan and solos admired for their pathos. He sang for Naushad again in Anokhi Ada (1948), including duets with Shamshad Begum, and later played Tansen in Baiju Bawra (1952), lip-syncing to Ustad Amir Khan.

The records in this collection

11 records carry a Surendra credit, all Hindi LPs on HMV and EMI. At the centre are later pressings of Anmol Ghadi, with Noor Jehan, Suraiya and Shamshad Begum, and Anokhi Ada, with Shamshad Begum and Mukesh. He also appears on HMV's Yaadon Ki Manzil anthology of early film songs, next to K. L. Saigal and Kanan Devi.

Buying Surendra vinyl from us

These 1930s and 1940s recordings reached LP years later, so faint background noise can come from the source rather than wear; we describe anything beyond that. We grade vinyl and sleeve separately, mark records that have lost their sleeve, photograph the actual copy and post from Bengaluru worldwide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these Surendra solo albums?

No. They are soundtrack LPs and HMV compilations on which he is one of several credited voices.

Is an Anmol Ghadi LP a 1946 pressing?

No. The LP only appeared in 1948, so the film's songs were first sold on 78 rpm discs. Surendra vinyl records of the film are later HMV and EMI issues; check the label in each listing.
