Shakeel Badayuni Vinyl Records
Shakeel Badayuni (1916–1970) was an Urdu poet from Badaun who studied at Aligarh Muslim University and moved to Bombay in 1944 to write for films. Naushad took him on for A.R. Kardar's Dard (1947), and Shakeel remained his lyricist on most of his films for more than two decades, among them Deedar, Baiju Bawra, Mother India and Mughal-e-Azam. He also wrote the songs of Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960) and Gharana (1961) for Ravi and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962) for Hemant Kumar, and away from the cinema his ghazals were sung by Begum Akhtar.

They are Hindi film soundtracks and song compilations rather than albums of his poetry, and many share space with lyrics by Shailendra, Majrooh Sultanpuri or Hasrat Jaipuri. Naushad's scores form the core, so Mohammed Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Shamshad Begum and Asha Bhosle are the voices you hear most, with Suraiya on several records. The 1960s make up the largest share, and there is a good run of 1940s films as well. Look for Dard (1947), Deedar (1951), Baiju Bawra, Uran Khatola, Gunga Jumna and Ravi's Gharana.
