Naushad Vinyl Records
Naushad Ali (1919–2006) brought Hindustani classical music into the heart of the Hindi film song. Working from the 1940s onward with lyricist Shakeel Badayuni and the voices of Mohammed Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar, he built scores of unmatched formality and weight — Baiju Bawra rooted in classical ragas, the epic sweep of Mother India and Aan, and the crowning achievement of Mughal-e-Azam (1960), whose songs remain the reference point for grandeur in Indian cinema. He was famously selective, scoring far fewer films than his contemporaries, and was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1981.

Naushad's peak years sit at the transition from 78 rpm shellac to the microgroove LP in India, so his catalogue on vinyl is a mix of original soundtrack LPs and the HMV compilations that gathered his earlier songs onto long-playing records. The Mughal-e-Azam soundtrack is the anchor — one of the most recognisable Indian LPs ever issued, repressed many times and still the record most Naushad collectors start with. Golden-age titles like Baiju Bawra, Mere Mehboob and Mother India carry the same appeal: this is the sound of Hindi cinema's classical high period, cut when HMV's pressing plants were at their best. The 45 rpm EPs from his films are worth watching for as well, often carrying artwork that differs from the LP issues, and because HMV compiled and recompiled his songbook over the years, patient collectors can assemble the catalogue several different ways.
