Talat Mahmood Vinyl Records
Talat Mahmood (1924–1998) was born in Lucknow and began singing ghazals on All India Radio there, making his first record for HMV in 1941. In the 1940s he worked in Calcutta, where he recorded Bengali songs as Tapan Kumar, and after moving to Bombay in 1949 he found fame with Anil Biswas's Ae Dil Mujhe Aisi Jagah Le Chal from Arzoo (1950). His soft, quivering voice was suited to the sombre film ghazals of the 1950s.
The records in this collection
24 records carry a Talat Mahmood credit, all of them Hindi film songs. Some are soundtracks on which he is one of several voices, among them Daag, Babul, Devdas and Jahan Ara; others are compilations such as Romantic Songs by Talat Mahmood and his Duets to Remember with Asha Bhosle. Shankar-Jaikishan is the composer who recurs most, with Madan Mohan, Naushad and S.D. Burman, while Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammed Rafi are heard most often beside him.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are there Talat Mahmood solo albums here?
The shelf is built around his film songs rather than his non-film ghazals, but our Talat Mahmood vinyl records include compilations that gather his film songs and duets onto one LP.
Does this collection include his Bengali songs as Tapan Kumar?
No. Everything here is Hindi and comes from his Bombay years: mostly 1950s and 1960s film songs, on LPs that EMI India issued from the 1960s onwards.
