Madan Mohan (1924–1975) is Hindi cinema's ghazal composer without rival. Commercial blockbusters largely eluded him in his lifetime, but the songs he wrote for Lata Mangeshkar — "Lag Ja Gale" from Woh Kaun Thi, "Naina Barse" from the same film, the aching melodies of Mera Saaya and Dastak — are now held among the finest Hindi film songs ever recorded. Working with lyricists like Raja Mehdi Ali Khan and Kaifi Azmi, and with Rafi on the soldiers' songs of Haqeeqat, he built a catalogue whose reputation has only risen in the decades since his early death.

Here is the collector's paradox: the composer most revered by connoisseurs sold modestly in his own time, so his original HMV pressings were made in smaller quantities than those of his chart-dominating contemporaries. Original soundtrack LPs of films like Woh Kaun Thi, Mera Saaya, Anpadh and Hanste Zakhm are therefore genuinely harder to find than their fame suggests, and clean copies move quickly when they surface. HMV's later tribute compilations gathered his best-known songs and are the practical starting point; the original film issues are the prize. EPs fill some of the gaps too — several of his films reached vinyl first or only as 45 rpm issues, and these small records are treasured for the same reasons the LPs are. Whatever the format, his songs' devoted audience keeps every clean copy in steady demand.
