Asha Bhosle Vinyl Records
Asha Bhosle (born 1933 in Sangli) is the most versatile playback voice Hindi cinema has produced — equally credible in a cabaret number, a ghazal, a classical piece or a straight romantic melody. After years of secondary assignments, O.P. Nayyar built entire scores around her in the late 1950s, and from Teesri Manzil (1966) onwards her partnership with R.D. Burman — whom she later married — redefined what a Hindi film song could sound like. Khayyam's Umrao Jaan (1981) brought her a National Film Award and showed the ghazal singer behind the pop voice; a second National Award followed for Ijaazat (1987).
The records in this collection
Every record here is an original Hindi film soundtrack LP or EP on which Asha Bhosle is a verified lead voice. These are film records, not solo albums: her songs share the disc with the rest of that film's score, sung by the rest of its cast of voices. The late-1950s and 1960s Nayyar and S.D. Burman titles typically appear on HMV, Angel and Odeon, pressed by The Gramophone Company of India. Her R.D. Burman peak — Teesri Manzil, Caravan, Hare Rama Hare Krishna and the run that followed — spans HMV and EMI India sleeves, with many 1970s and 1980s soundtracks pressed on Polydor. Collectors chasing the funk- and rock-inflected Burman scores will find that era especially well represented.
