Hasrat Jaipuri Vinyl Records

Hasrat Jaipuri (1922–1999) was born Iqbal Hussain in Jaipur. His first recorded film song was "Jiya Beqaraar Hai" in Barsaat (1949), and with Shailendra he went on to write the lyrics for Raj Kapoor's films until 1971, most of them scored by Shankar-Jaikishan. His work with the duo went well beyond R.K. Films, as in Junglee (1961) with "Ehsan Tera Hoga Mujh Par". He also wrote "Yeh Mera Prem Patra Padh Kar" for Sangam.

Films of the 1960s form the heart of the shelf, with good runs from the 1970s and 1980s and a few from the 1950s. Shankar-Jaikishan composed most of them and Hasrat often shares the credit with Shailendra, while Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammed Rafi are the voices you will hear most, followed by Mukesh, Asha Bhosle and Suman Kalyanpur.

These are soundtracks and film-song compilations on which he wrote some or all of the songs, not albums under his name. Titles include the R.K. Films productions Awaara, Boot Polish and Sangam (1964), along with Diwana (1967) and Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai (1970). Most are EMI pressings, many on its Odeon and Angel imprints.

There is much overlap, but not complete. This shelf also holds soundtracks by Kalyanji-Anandji and others for which Hasrat wrote songs, while many Shankar-Jaikishan records carry lyrics by Shailendra or other writers alone. If you collect the team, browse both.

Why does a 1950s film sometimes show a later year?

Films such as Awaara, Aah and Boot Polish came out in the early 1950s, when film songs were sold on 78 rpm shellac discs; The Gramophone Company of India only began pressing LPs locally in the late 1950s. A listing's year can therefore reflect a later LP edition rather than the film's release.
