Roshan Vinyl Records

Roshan (Roshan Lal Nagrath, 1917–1967) was born in Gujranwala in Punjab and made his name in Bombay with Bawre Nain (1950). He was steeped in Hindustani classical music, the ghazal and the qawwali, and Barsaat Ki Raat (1960), with its celebrated qawwalis, was the biggest musical success of his career. His later scores include Taj Mahal (1963), Chitralekha (1964) and Mamta (1966), and his songs are known for their melody and subtle orchestration. He is the father of the filmmaker Rakesh Roshan and the composer Rajesh Roshan.

The records in this collection

28 records carry a Roshan credit as music director, all of them Hindi film music. These Roshan vinyl records are original soundtracks of his films, not composer albums, so the voices are those of each film: most often Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammed Rafi, then Mukesh and Asha Bhosle. Look for Barsaat Ki Raat, Chitralekha (1964), Mamta (1966), Dil Hi To Hai, Bawre Nain and Devar. Lyric credits include Indeevar, Kaif Irfani, Majrooh Sultanpuri and Anand Bakshi. Most copies date from the 1960s and 1970s and came out on EMI India's EMI, HMV and Angel labels.

Why is a film from the early 1950s on a later pressing?

Films such as Bawre Nain and Malhar came out when Hindi film songs were still sold on 78 rpm shellac, so LPs of those scores are later EMI India issues, some from the 1970s.
