Hemant Kumar Vinyl Records

Hemant Kumar (1920–1989) was born Hemanta Mukhopadhyay in Varanasi and is known in Bengal as Hemanta Mukherjee. A singer and composer in Bengali and Hindi, he was a prominent exponent of Rabindra Sangeet. In Hindi films he sang often for S.D. Burman in Dev Anand pictures, including "Yeh Raat Yeh Chandni Phir Kahan" in Jaal and "Hai Apna Dil To Awara" in Solva Saal, and as a composer he scored Nagin (1954), Bees Saal Baad (1962), Kohraa and Khamoshi.

Our Hemant Kumar vinyl records are Hindi film LPs and EPs on which he is credited as a singer, centred on the songs of the 1950s and 1960s, though several are later EMI pressings. 30 records carry his credit. Lata Mangeshkar is his most frequent partner, with Asha Bhosle, Mohammed Rafi and Talat Mahmood also present; composers include Roshan, C. Ramchandra and Hemant Kumar himself. Look for Nagin, Shart, Anarkali, Mamta (1966) and Gunga Jumna, plus English-titled compilations such as Modern Motion Picture Music of India.

Are Hemant Kumar's Bengali records in this collection?

No. Much of his work, including Rabindra Sangeet, was in Bengali, but the records here are Hindi film titles and compilations of Hindi film songs.

Is this an original 1950s pressing?

Often not. The Gramophone Company of India only began pressing LPs locally in 1958, so the songs of earlier films first came out on 78 rpm shellac, and a soundtrack like Anarkali may be a later EMI issue. Ask us if the photographs leave any doubt.
