Anand Bakshi Vinyl Records

Anand Bakshi (1930–2002) was born in Rawalpindi. He served in the Royal Indian Navy as a teenager and later in the Indian Army, writing poetry in his spare time. His first film songs came in Bhalaa Aadmi (1958), and over the next four decades he became one of Hindi cinema's most prolific lyricists. His most enduring partnership was with Laxmikant-Pyarelal, which lasted three decades, and he also wrote for R.D. Burman, Kalyanji-Anandji and S.D. Burman; Aradhana, Bobby and Sholay all carry his words. He kept his vocabulary deliberately simple, writing from each film's story and characters.

219 records in our catalogue carry an Anand Bakshi lyric credit. These are original Hindi film soundtracks for which he wrote some or all of the songs, not albums of his own. The 1980s make up the bulk of the shelf, with the 1970s and 1960s behind and a few from the early 1990s. Laxmikant-Pyarelal composed most of them, while Kalyanji-Anandji, R.D. Burman, S.D. Burman and Roshan appear less often. The main singers are Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle and Mohammed Rafi, joined in the 1980s by Anuradha Paudwal, Shabbir Kumar, Alka Yagnik and Suresh Wadkar.

Look for Farz (1967), Do Raaste, Amar Akbar Anthony (1977), Naseeb (1981), Nagina and Saudagar (1991). Labels run from EMI and its Odeon imprint through Polydor and Music India to T-Series in the later 1980s.

Why does the collection stop in the early 1990s?

By then cassettes had overtaken the LP as the main format for Hindi film music in India. Bakshi kept writing for another decade, on films including Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Taal, but that later work belongs mainly to the cassette and CD years.
