Majrooh Sultanpuri Vinyl Records

Majrooh Sultanpuri (1919–2000) was born Asrar ul Hassan Khan in Sultanpur and was an Urdu poet of the Progressive Writers' Movement whose film career lasted more than half a century. He entered films with Shah Jehan (1946), scored by Naushad, and went on to write for S.D. Burman, Madan Mohan, O.P. Nayyar, Roshan, Laxmikant-Pyarelal and R.D. Burman, and later for Anand-Milind's Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988).

Our Majrooh Sultanpuri vinyl records are mostly original Hindi film soundtracks, chiefly LPs, on which he is credited as lyricist. 33 records carry his name, from the mid-1950s to the early 1990s, with the 1980s and 1960s best represented: Roshan's Mamta and S.D. Burman's Jewel Thief sit beside Laxmikant-Pyarelal's Jal Bin Machhli Nritya Bin Bijli, R.D. Burman's Kaalia and Naushad's Dharam Kanta (1982). R.D. Burman is the composer you will meet most, and the voices are chiefly Asha Bhosle, Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi and Mukesh. Most pressings come from EMI in India, including HMV, Odeon and Angel issues, with Music India and Polydor on others.
