Indivar Vinyl Records

Indivar (1924–1997), also spelt Indeevar, was the pen name of Shyamalal Babu Rai, a lyricist who grew up near Jhansi, first made his name with Malhar (1951) and was still writing film songs in the 1990s. His longest partnership was with Kalyanji-Anandji, for whom he wrote "Kasme Waade Pyar Wafa" in Upkar (1967), the songs of Saraswatichandra (1968) and "Zindagi Ka Safar" in Safar. In the 1980s he took on a lighter, more upbeat style for Bappi Lahiri, as in Himmatwala (1983), and among his last films were Rajesh Roshan's Karan Arjun (1995) and Koyla (1997).

The records in this collection

61 records in our catalogue credit Indivar as a lyricist. Almost all of our Indivar vinyl records are 1980s Hindi soundtracks, with a handful from the late 1960s, 1970s and early 1990s. Bappi Lahiri composed the largest share, followed by Kalyanji-Anandji and Anu Malik, with a few by Usha Khanna and Rajesh Roshan, and on some records he shares the lyric credit with Anjaan or Gulshan Bawra. These are film soundtracks, not albums under his name.

Asha Bhosle and Kishore Kumar are the voices you will hear most, followed by Lata Mangeshkar, Shabbir Kumar and Mohammed Aziz. Titles include Sachaa Jhutha, Hera Pheri, Prem Geet (1981), Mard (1985) and Dilwaala (1986). Music India and Polydor issued many, alongside T-Series (Super Cassettes Industries), Venus and EMI.

Buying Indivar vinyl from us

We grade each record by hand, sleeve and vinyl separately, and photograph the copy that will be posted to you. Sleeves from this period often carry price stickers, shop stamps, writing or creased corners, and the vinyl can show scuffs from years of play. We describe what we find plainly and are glad to answer questions before you buy. Orders ship from Bengaluru in rigid mailers, within India and worldwide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Indivar the same lyricist as Indeevar?

Yes. Sleeves and labels print his pen name several ways, including Indivar, Indeevar and Indiwar, but they are the same writer, so try more than one spelling when searching for a song.

Are his Kalyanji-Anandji songs in this collection?

Some are. Kalyanji-Anandji are the second most frequent composers here, on titles such as Sachaa Jhutha and Hera Pheri, where he shared the lyric writing with other writers. The balance with his 1980s Bappi Lahiri work shifts as records come in.
