Kishore Kumar (1929–1987) was born Abhas Kumar Ganguly in Khandwa and came to Bombay Talkies in the late 1940s, initially as an actor and chorus singer. Entirely self-taught, he turned his limitations into a style: an elastic baritone, conversational phrasing and the yodel he picked up from imported Jimmie Rodgers and Tex Morton 78s. S.D. Burman shaped his early singing voice, and after Aradhana (1969) he became the dominant male playback voice of Hindi cinema, recording prolifically for R.D. Burman, Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Kalyanji-Anandji and later Bappi Lahiri, and winning eight Filmfare Awards for Best Male Playback Singer along the way.
