Kalyanji-Anandji Vinyl Records
Brothers Kalyanji and Anandji Virji Shah scored Hindi films from the late 1950s into the 1990s, and few composers covered as much ground. Kalyanji had already made history playing the snake-charmer melody of Nagin (1954) on the clavioline — an early landmark of electronic sound in Indian film — before the duo built a catalogue that runs from the devotional sweep of Saraswatichandra to the brooding Safar, and on to the Amitabh Bachchan era they helped define with Zanjeer, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar and Don. They won the Filmfare Award for Kora Kagaz and worked with every major playback voice of their time.
The Kalyanji-Anandji vinyl catalogue
Kalyanji-Anandji occupy a special place for international collectors: their 1970s action scores, built on tight basslines, wah guitar and brass, are among the most sampled Indian film music ever pressed. Don (1978) and Qurbani (1980) are permanent fixtures on global funk want lists, and original Indian pressings — HMV and Polydor-era labels among them — routinely leave India for collections abroad. Alongside the funk landmarks sit the melodic 1960s soundtracks and hit compilations that show the brothers' softer register, from Johny Mera Naam to the ballads of Safar. Their 45 rpm EPs deserve a mention too — action-film artwork, tight song selections, the same breaks in a smaller package. Condition matters more than usual with this catalogue, since the bass-heavy cuts expose groove wear quickly; we play-grade the loud passages for exactly that reason.
