Anu Malik Vinyl Records

Anu Malik was born Anwar Sardar Malik in Bombay in 1960, the son of the composer Sardar Malik. He made his debut as a music director with Hunterwali 77 (1977); Sohni Mahiwal (1984) was a success, and Manmohan Desai’s Mard (1985) gave him his first mainstream breakthrough. Baazigar (1993) and Border (1997) followed, and television audiences know him as a judge on Indian Idol.

The records in this collection

18 records carry an Anu Malik credit: Hindi film soundtrack LPs, nearly all from the 1980s, on T-Series (Super Cassettes Industries), EMI, Music India and Venus. Shabbir Kumar is the voice heard most, with Kishore Kumar, Amit Kumar, Anuradha Paudwal and Alka Yagnik, and Indivar and Anjaan wrote many of the lyrics. Alongside Sohni Mahiwal and Mard you will find Jaan Ki Baazi (1985), Ek Chadar Maili Si (1986) and Maalamaal (1988).

Which years do these Anu Malik vinyl records cover?

Mostly the 1980s. His 1990s scores, such as Baazigar and Border, came out when Hindi film music was sold mainly on cassette and CD.

Are these Anu Malik albums?

No. They are soundtracks of films he scored, sung by each film’s playback singers, though he sings a few songs himself, as on Maalamaal.
