Anjaan Vinyl Records

Anjaan was the pen name of Lalji Pandey, a Hindi film lyricist from Benares (now Varanasi) who died in 1997. He is best known for his songs in Amitabh Bachchan films, above all those directed by Prakash Mehra: Muqaddar Ka Sikandar and Laawaris with music by Kalyanji-Anandji, then Namak Halaal and Sharaabi with Bappi Lahiri. For Kalyanji-Anandji he also wrote "Khaike Paan Banaraswala" in Don. His son Sameer followed him into film songwriting.

The records in this collection

90 records in our catalogue carry an Anjaan lyric credit. Nearly all are Hindi film soundtracks, with a few EPs and compilations, on which he wrote some or all of the songs, sometimes sharing the credit with Indivar or with Prakash Mehra himself. The 1980s account for most of the shelf, with a handful of titles from the 1970s and the early 1990s.

Bappi Lahiri is the composer you will meet most often, followed by Kalyanji-Anandji and Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar lead the singers, then Alka Yagnik, Amit Kumar and Shabbir Kumar. Look for Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, Hera Pheri, Laawaris (1981), Mahaan (1982) and Sagar Sangam (1986). EMI pressed the largest share, followed by T-Series (Super Cassettes Industries), with CBS, Music India, Venus and Polydor copies as well.
