Alka Yagnik Vinyl Records
Alka Yagnik was born in Kolkata in 1966 into a Gujarati family. Her mother, Shubha, trained in Indian classical music, started her singing young, and as a child she performed for All India Radio in Calcutta. When her mother took her to Bombay, Raj Kapoor heard her sing and sent her with a letter to the composer Laxmikant. She recorded her first film song at 14, for Payal Ki Jhankaar (1980), and Tezaab (1988) brought her breakthrough. She has credited Laxmikant-Pyarelal and Kalyanji-Anandji with mentoring and shaping her voice, and in the 1990s she became one of the leading female playback singers, often duetting with Kumar Sanu and Udit Narayan.
The records in this collection
98 records in our catalogue name Alka Yagnik among the singers. They are original film soundtracks on which she is one of the playback voices, not solo albums, and most come from her first decade in films, the 1980s. Nearly all are Hindi, with a few Gujarati soundtracks such as Pankhi No Malo, while later vinyl pressings of Guru and Kal Ho Naa Ho sit at the far end. Laxmikant-Pyarelal and Kalyanji-Anandji lead the composer credits, and she most often shares these records with Asha Bhosle, Anuradha Paudwal, Suresh Wadkar, Kishore Kumar and Shabbir Kumar, singing words by Anand Bakshi, Anjaan and Indivar.
Her debut soundtrack, Payal Ki Jhankaar (1980), is here, along with Laawaris (1981), Vidhaata (1982), Coolie (1983), Khatron Ke Khiladi (1988) and Ajooba (1990).
Buying Alka Yagnik vinyl from us
We grade every record by hand, judging sleeve and vinyl on their own terms, and photograph the actual copy for the listing. Most are 1980s pressings on T-Series, EMI, Music India, HMV and Venus, and their sleeves tend to show the wear of records played at home: ring marks, corner knocks and names written on the back, all of which we show. Orders ship worldwide from Bengaluru in rigid, record-safe packaging.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this collection cover Alka Yagnik's 1990s hits?
Only at the edges. By the time of her biggest 1990s films, cassettes and CDs had largely replaced the LP for Hindi film music, so this shelf mostly documents her early years with Laxmikant-Pyarelal and Kalyanji-Anandji, with only a few 1990s LPs.
Are these Alka Yagnik solo albums?
No. Each is a film soundtrack, with her songs sitting alongside those of the other singers in the film, often Anuradha Paudwal, Asha Bhosle or Suresh Wadkar.
