Shailendra Singh Vinyl Records

Shailendra Singh was born in Mumbai in 1952 and trained as an actor at the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune. He was in his second year there when Raj Kapoor signed him to sing for Rishi Kapoor in Bobby (1973), and his song "Main Shayar To Nahin", composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal, became a big hit. For R.D. Burman he sang "Humne Tumko Dekha" in Khel Khel Mein (1975), and he joined Kishore Kumar and Mahendra Kapoor on the title song of Amar Akbar Anthony (1977). Through the 1970s and 1980s he recorded duets with Asha Bhosle, Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar.

The records in this collection

61 records here carry a Shailendra Singh credit. They are original Hindi film soundtrack LPs and EPs rather than solo albums. The shelf leans heavily towards the 1980s, with a smaller group from the 1970s and a couple of titles from the early 1990s. Laxmikant-Pyarelal scores dominate, followed by Bappi Lahiri, R.D. Burman and Usha Khanna, and Anand Bakshi is the lyricist you will see most often on the back of the sleeve.

Look for Amar Akbar Anthony (1977), Naseeb (1981), Coolie (1983), Manzil Manzil (1984), Kranti and Ghar Ek Mandir. Asha Bhosle appears alongside him most often, with Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Suresh Wadkar and Mahendra Kapoor close behind.

Buying Shailendra Singh vinyl from us

Most copies are EMI India pressings, with Music India, Polydor and T-Series issues making up much of the rest, and Indian pressings of the 1980s vary a good deal in quality. We grade the vinyl and the sleeve separately, photograph the actual copy you will receive, and point out seam splits, ring wear, writing or stickers rather than hiding them in a grade. Records leave Bengaluru for buyers worldwide in stiff, record-safe mailers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do any of these records put Shailendra Singh on his own?

No. They are film soundtracks on which he sings one or more songs, often a duet or a multi-singer number such as the Amar Akbar Anthony title song. Our back-sleeve photographs show which tracks are his.

Is this the lyricist Shailendra?

No. Shailendra Singh is the playback singer who began with Bobby. The lyricist Shailendra, known for the songs he wrote for Raj Kapoor's films with Shankar-Jaikishan, is a different person, and this shelf is built from credits for the singer.
