Suman Kalyanpur Vinyl Records

Suman Kalyanpur was born Suman Hemmady in 1937. She began singing for films in the early 1950s, first in Marathi, and her first Hindi film song to reach cinemas was a duet with Talat Mahmood in Darwaza (1954). Of the many composers she recorded for, she sang most often for Shankar-Jaikishan and Roshan, and she was a frequent duet partner of Mohammed Rafi, as on "Aajkal Tere Mere Pyar Ke Charche" from Brahmachari (1968). Her voice is often compared with Lata Mangeshkar's, and many of her songs are easily mistaken for Lata's.

The records in this collection

69 records in our catalogue credit Suman Kalyanpur, nearly all Hindi, with the 1970s and 1960s making up most of the shelf and a smaller group from the 1980s. They are soundtracks, EPs and film-song compilations on which she sings one or more songs, not solo albums. Mohammed Rafi appears beside her most often, followed by Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle and Mukesh.

Composers include Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Kalyanji-Anandji, Shankar-Jaikishan, Usha Khanna and Naushad, with lyrics most often by Hasrat Jaipuri, Anand Bakshi and Shailendra. Titles include Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya (1966), Farz (1967), Saathi, Jahan Ara and Naseeb (1981). Most are on EMI and its Odeon and Angel imprints, with Columbia and Polydor pressings too.

Buying Suman Kalyanpur vinyl from us

Most of our Suman Kalyanpur vinyl records come from films of the 1960s and 1970s. We grade each by hand, sleeve and vinyl separately, and photograph the copy you will receive. Expect honest signs of age, from ring wear and faded spines to writing and split seams, and read the vinyl grade on its own: a worn cover can hold clean vinyl. The 45 rpm EPs are graded to the same standard. We ship from Bengaluru in rigid mailers, across India and worldwide.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know it is Suman Kalyanpur and not Lata Mangeshkar singing?

Because their voices are so easily confused, go by the credits on the label or sleeve rather than by ear. Every record here credits Suman Kalyanpur as a singer, and we will happily check a label for a specific song.

Are there any Suman Kalyanpur solo records here?

Not in the usual sense. The soundtracks share her with other singers, and compilations such as Classical Songs From Films (1966) gather songs by several artists, hers among them.
