Mahendra Kapoor Vinyl Records

Mahendra Kapoor (1934–2008) was born in Amritsar. Winning the Metro Murphy all-India singing competition led to his playback debut in V. Shantaram's Navrang, where he sang "Aadha Hai Chandrama Raat Aadhi" with Asha Bhosle for C. Ramchandra, and he regarded Mohammed Rafi as his guru. A singer with a wide vocal range, he became closely tied to B.R. Chopra's films, for which Ravi scored Gumrah, Waqt and Hamraaz, and to Manoj Kumar's patriotic cinema, above all "Mere Desh Ki Dharti" from Upkar. He also sang a great deal in Gujarati, Punjabi, Marathi and Bhojpuri films.

The records in this collection

183 records in our catalogue credit Mahendra Kapoor as a playback singer. They are original film soundtracks on which his is one of several voices, not solo albums. Most are Hindi, running from Navrang (1959) through the 1960s and 1970s to a large body of 1980s titles, with Gujarati soundtracks and the Punjabi film Rano alongside. Asha Bhosle is his most frequent partner on these sleeves, followed by Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi and Kishore Kumar, with Mukesh, Manna Dey and Usha Mangeshkar also appearing. Kalyanji-Anandji and Laxmikant-Pyarelal lead the composer credits, followed by Ravi, Bappi Lahiri and C. Ramchandra.

Titles to look out for include Sangam (1964), Waqt (1965), Aadmi, Roti Kapada Aur Makaan, Nikaah and Kranti.

Buying Mahendra Kapoor vinyl from us

Every record is graded by hand, with sleeve and vinyl judged separately, and photographed as the actual copy. Much of this shelf was issued in India by EMI under its HMV, Odeon and Angel labels, and the 1960s pressings are now more than half a century old. Expect honest wear on those jackets, such as ring marks, seam splits and faded spines, shown in the photographs rather than hidden. Records are packed in rigid, record-safe packaging and shipped worldwide from Bengaluru.
