The 1969 second album on 180 gram vinyl, remastered by Jimmy Page. The hype sticker calls it the classic album and lists Whole Lotta Love and Ramble On, which is a fair summary of why it matters: the first is the riff that defined hard rock radio for a decade, the second is the quiet proof that the band could write as well as they could hit things.
It was made almost entirely on the road, in snatched sessions in London, Los Angeles, New York and Vancouver while the band toured North America, then mixed by Eddie Kramer. That accounts for its restlessness, and for the theremin break in the middle of Whole Lotta Love, which Page built out of studio accidents.
David Juniper's sleeve takes a photograph of the Jasta 11 Flying Circus, the German fighter squadron, and airbrushes the band's faces onto it, which is how a First World War aviation photograph ended up as one of the best known covers in rock.
