Iron Maiden's ninth studio album, from May 1992, in the 2017 Parlophone reissue: two 180 gram LPs in a gatefold sleeve, with the 2015 remastered audio. The back sleeve reads Original 1992, Remaster 2015. Running almost 58 minutes, it was the band's first double studio LP.
After making No Prayer For The Dying in his barn with a mobile studio, Steve Harris had the building converted into a proper studio, Barnyard, and this album was recorded and mixed there. It was the first album Harris produced, together with Martin Birch, and the last Iron Maiden album Birch produced. It was also the last studio album with Bruce Dickinson on vocals until he rejoined in 1999, and it went to number one on the UK Albums Chart.
Be Quick Or Be Dead opens the album in a faster, heavier thrash style, and Wasting Love was the band's first power ballad. Afraid To Shoot Strangers is Harris's song from the point of view of a soldier in the Gulf War. Harris also wrote the title track, Fear Of The Dark, which closes disc two; a live version recorded on the 1992 tour reached number 8 in the UK as a single in 1993. The cover is by Melvyn Grant, the first Iron Maiden album cover not designed by Derek Riggs.
