Khayyam Vinyl Records
Mohammed Zahur Khayyam (1927–2019) was Hindi cinema's great refiner — a composer who worked slowly, chose films carefully, and wrote as if every song had to last. His partnership with poet Sahir Ludhianvi produced Phir Subah Hogi and, decades later, the title song of Kabhi Kabhie (1976), among the most loved Hindi film songs ever written. His masterpiece is Umrao Jaan (1981), whose ghazals for Asha Bhosle — "Dil Cheez Kya Hai", "In Aankhon Ki Masti" — won National Film Awards and showed a completely unexpected register of her voice. Trishul, Noorie, Bazaar and Razia Sultan round out a catalogue defined by poetry-first composition.
The Khayyam vinyl catalogue
Because Khayyam scored relatively few films, his vinyl catalogue is small and coherent — a collection a patient buyer can realistically complete. The essential records are late-1970s and early-1980s pressings from the major Indian labels of the period: Kabhi Kabhie and Umrao Jaan above all, with Bazaar and Razia Sultan close behind for ghazal listeners. These albums attract a distinct kind of collector — often the same people who buy non-film ghazal LPs — and they hold their appeal because the music was never tied to passing fashion in the first place. His non-film ghazal recordings, made with singers including his wife Jagjit Kaur, occasionally appear alongside the soundtracks and are equally worth shelf space. Sleeve condition matters here — these albums traded on elegant packaging, and collectors expect it intact.
