Allah Rakha Classical Vinyl Records
Before the tabla had a global audience, it had Ustad Alla Rakha (1919–2000). A master of the Punjab gharana, he was the accompanist of choice for Pandit Ravi Shankar through the decades when Indian classical music first travelled the world — Monterey Pop in 1967, Woodstock in 1969, concert halls across Europe and America. Western audiences hearing a raga for the first time were also hearing Alla Rakha, and his rapport with Shankar did as much as anything to teach the world what tabla accompaniment could be. He was honoured with the Padma Shri, and his legacy continued directly through his sons — most famously Ustad Zakir Hussain.
This collection brings together vinyl associated with the Alla Rakha name, centred on Hindi pressings from the classic HMV/EMI India era. His recorded legacy on LP spans classical accompaniment alongside the great soloists of his time, tabla showcases, and his celebrated rhythmic dialogues — the tabla heard not as background but as a voice with its own grammar of theka, kayda and tihai. One collector's note worth knowing: "Allah Rakha" is also the title of a 1986 Hindi film, so soundtrack LPs bearing the same name circulate too; our listings describe each record plainly so you always know exactly what a given copy is.
Why Alla Rakha era pressings are collectible
Classical and tabla-focused LPs were never pressed in film-soundtrack quantities, and records from Alla Rakha's generation are the documents of Hindustani music's first international age. Original Indian pressings carry the label art and sleeve notes of their time, and analogue playback suits the tabla exceptionally well — the snap of the dayan and the swooping bass of the bayan come through with a body that early digital transfers rarely matched. Copies in strong condition grow scarcer every year.
