The Klipsch R-40PM is a pair of powered bookshelf monitors with the amplification and a phono preamp built in. It is the compact model of the two, a 4" woofer in a 30 cm cabinet, aimed at a desk, a bookshelf, or a smaller room where a full separates system would be overkill.

Why these suit a record player
The right speaker is the active one: it holds the amplification for both channels, and the left speaker connects to it with the supplied wire. What matters here is the built-in phono preamp, a phono input with a Phono/Line switch and a proper earth screw terminal. A moving-magnet cartridge puts out only a few thousandths of a volt and needs RIAA equalisation before anything else can use it, which normally means a separate box or an amplifier with a PHONO socket. These do it internally, so a turntable connects straight in.

Flip the switch to Line and the same input takes any line-level source, so a deck that already has its own phono stage works too.
How they sound
A 1" aluminium LTS tweeter sits in Klipsch's 90° x 90° square Tractrix horn, which gives the brand its characteristic directness and keeps the stereo image stable across a wide seat. The spun-copper thermoformed crystal polymer (TCP) woofer uses steeper cone angling for a smoother response through the crossover. The cabinet is MDF, bass-reflex via a rear-firing port, so leave some clearance behind them rather than pushing them flat against a wall.
Dynamic Bass EQ lifts the low end at lower volumes, where the ear is least sensitive to it. A low-profile magnetic grille lets you run them covered in black, or exposed with the copper woofer showing.

Which one is right for you?
Choose the R-40PM if the speakers will sit close to you, on a desk or a shelf within a couple of metres, or if the room is small. If you want more output and lower bass for a living room, compare the R-50PM, which has a bigger woofer and roughly double the power.

Can I connect a turntable directly to the Klipsch R-40PM?
Yes. The R-40PM has a phono input with a Phono/Line switch and an earth screw terminal, so a moving-magnet turntable connects straight in with no separate phono stage or amplifier. If your deck already has its own phono preamp, set the switch to Line instead.
Do I need an amplifier or receiver with these?

Can I add a subwoofer later?
Yes. There is a single RCA line-level subwoofer output, and the remote has dedicated subwoofer level up, down and reset buttons.
